Here’s a little experiment. Sony’s “Slow Movie Record” technology compresses 240fps for three seconds into a buffer and then processes it for another 12 seconds resulting in a 12 second shot. It appears to process at 60i. So I edited this in Apple’s Final Cut into a 720-60p timeline, then used Apple’s cinema tools to conform the sequence into 24p, resulting in changing the already slow-motion video to a relatively smooth 40%. If my math is correct, playback is actually 6.25% of normal speed. There is a significant loss of quality, but this video also has a bit of digital zoom, you should be able to tell which shots.

I’m going to be buying an external battery for my VIXIA series camcorder.

I was thinking of buying a Canon one, but I found this good review battery at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/BP-827-Rechargeable-Intelligent-Battery-Camcorders/dp/B003IQOU22/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1282416991&sr=1-2

Can anybody give me feedback on this product and how well it really works versus the more expensive Canon batteries?

I can understand wanting to buy a non-Canon battery because of huge savings. I have one of the BP batteries for my HV40 and it works fine and charges fine. As you read the buyer reviews on amazon.com you can see that BP and Kinamax have pretty good ratings. Some off-brand batteries (like on eBay) may not conform to industry standards and thus may have a high failure rate. I think the BP is a good choice.

I’ve never owned a camcorder before, but would like to get one to record moments with family members who are aging, fun times with friends, etc. I’ve looked around the internet reviews for quite a while and have decided on the Canon hv30 (not the hv20, even though they’re a bit cheaper, thanks). But, before I make the big purchase I want to know if I need to buy any software or extras for this camcorder. I have a Macbook with OS X 10.5 and a 2.5 GHz Intel processor and 2 GB memory that I just bought. Can I just plug the camera into the USB port (and does it come with cables?) and click on iMovie and put my video on the computer to burn onto DVD’s, or to be able to put it on the internet? Or do I have to buy additional software? I just want to be able to shoot it and plug it in, then wait for it to upload, and burn it, pull it out and play it in the DVD player. Can I do this if I just buy the camera? Help!
Oh, and is there a difference between iMovie and iMovieHD? Mine just says iMovie… but I do see that I have iDVD, so I guess that’s how I can burn the recording to a DVD. But can I even get it onto my computer, and do I have to buy FinalCut or anything like that?

The HV30 is a fine choice.

ALL miniDV tape based camcorders transfer DV/HDV format video using firewire. You will need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect the 4-pin DV port on the HV30 to the 6-pin firewire400 port on your Mac. All Macs made in about the last 10 years have a firewire 400 port (the only exception is the MacBook Air).

USB transfer from the camcorder’s tape will not work. It is used only for transferring stills from the memory card. NEVER connect the USB and firewire cables to the computer at the same time.

Your Mac’s configuration is fine for editing HDV (and DV). You *might* need to install some software, but if you have the MacOSX system discs that cam with the computer, then you already have what you need – you may need to do a "Custom Install" to get a QuickTime component, "Apple Intermediate Codec" in order for the computer to understand and do something with the HDV format video.

Connect the camcorder to the computer with the firewire cable (firewire IEEE1394a and i.LINK are all the same thing), and connect the AC Power adapter to the camcorder. With the camcorder in VCR or Play mode, launch iMovieHD. Pick the video format you are importing and name the file. The blue "Camcorder Connected" screen will appear. Click import. When the video is done importing, edit, add scene transitions, titles, credits… save. Click on DVD. Set some bookmarks (scene transistions). Click iDVD. Add a background picture, add background music… click burn DVD.

iMovieHD is a video editor. iDVD is a DVD authoring application. You do not need FinalCut unless you need more sophisticated video editing capabilites. When iDVD is done you will have a DVD ready to play in a standard definition DVD player.

I wanted to know if anyone knew a very small but nice, professional Canon Camcorder. [doesn't have to be Canon. Maybe Sony? ] something like this but more compact maybe….and cheaper haha : http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/professional_camcorders/xh_g1s

I don’t like those tiny one’s that family uses just on trips and stuff. like this: http://us.camcorderprices.net/retailer/Canon-FS300-Blue-Flash-Memory-Camcorder.html?pid=73070290

i was googling and found Canon VIXIA HV40 HD HDV Camcorder which is really good.

This is a great camcorder. So far it has lived up to my expectations. It’s really easy to use right away without reading the manual and I began using it as soon as the battery was fully charged. After a month, I’m still learning all the available features, which are plenty. I have yet to use it to its full potential, so there’s plenty of room to grow with it. The built-in flash memory is great. I can only think of two negatives for this camera: the still picture mode only takes 1MP photos, which is fine for the web, but not good for printing, and the built-in light doesn’t provide much light. Everything else is above satisfactory.

admin <![CDATA[Microphone Comparisons: Rode Videomic & Rode NT3]]> http://www.123canoncamcorder.com/394/microphone-comparisons-rode-videomic-rode-nt3/ 2010-09-05T18:59:15Z 2010-09-05T18:59:15Z

Comparing the internal microphone on the Canon HG10 with the Rode Videomic and the Rode NT3 … hear for yourself.

The video turned out a bit dark, so I was playing with some filters in Final Cut Pro.

The audio is the actual track … I didn’t tweak them at all in post … wanted to give an authentic comparison.

My conclusion: If you have a video camera with an XLR input (or a mixer with XLR input that can connect to your camera, such as a JuicedLink), then I would recommend the Rode NT3 microphone over the Rode VideoMic.

I hope this comparison help you.
