Mostly, the folks who have trouble transferring are trying to use USB because that is the cable that came in the box. USB is for video streaming and transferring stills off a memory card. Firewire cables are cheap. Firewire ports can be cheap if your computer has an available PCI slot (desktop) or PCMCIA slot (laptop. If you need to get an Express card for Firewire, they can get a bit expensive.

Of the three camcorders you list, I like the ZR900 and 930. They have a mic-in jack to connect an external mic (though they do not have manual audio control).

I’m looking to shoot in interiors, as well as exteriors (beach in the morning with no excess of sunlight and night streets).

Software wise, I’ve installed Adobe Premiere and I’m planning on purchasing a steadicam and some lights too…

Well first consider the fact that although HD is growing, still not that many people have HD sets. Also, while HVR-A1 is a good camera, it isnt really something that youll be using forever, and eventually you’ll have to upgrade. Get it if you really want HD, but otherwise, Id say wait and get something cheaper (dare I say it, go consumer even), and then once you have the money, get something like the HVX200 or XH A1, which will be cheaper than they are now anyways, and even cheaper on ebay used. Also, more of your money can be spent on lights (BTW, lowes and home depot have cheap 500w worklights for $20-$30), steadicams (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/), mics (rode videomic), etc. Basically, save as much money as you can now so youll be able to get a nice HD cam later. Also, remember that if you do choose to get the HVR-A1, be sure your hardware supports HDV editing. As far as I know, premiere doesnt, but premiere pro does (1.5 needs a plugin), so if your software/computer part of the equation wont support HD, and you dont or cant spend an extra $500-$1000 on upgrades, then, obviously, choose something else. And if you plan on getting the A1 and not record in HD at all, then you might as well get a better but cheaper SD cam. I hope this made sense and helped as well!

However, I have a question. How long can it record video for? Up to how many minutes? I don’t mean what the manufacturer advertises on the box by the way. I mean, in your own experience, what’s the longest video you’ve been able to record with this camera?

Is it adequate for making YouTube videos or should I instead look at buying a camcorder? I would… BUT.. the only thing about camcorders is that I’m not sure how good they are at taking normal still photos (for profile pages such as myspace, and others). I would like something that is capable of both if possible and the SD600 seems like a good choice.
I also have one more question:

Does the camera support SD cards over 1GB? Would using one of these cards give me more recording time or does the camera limit the amount of time you can record?

The SD600 & SD630 are very good little cameras (which are identical, except that the 630 has a larger LCD and is minus an optical viewfinder). I have the SD700 IS, myself.
The best quality movies you can shoot are…
640×480 pixels at 30fps or
320×240 pixels at 30fps
Recording can continue until the memory card is full
(you can record up to a maximum of 1 GB at one time…which is approx. 8 minutes on the highest res or longer on lower res).

Fast Frame Rate is best used to record fast moving subjects; frame rate is 60 fps and resolution limited to 320×240; clip length is limited to 1 minute.

Here are the requirements for YouTube Videos…
"Videos on YouTube….are limited to 10 minutes (unless you’re a Director) and 100 MB.
Videos saved with the following settings convert the best:
MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
320×240 resolution
MP3 audio
30 frames per second framerate"

So…yes, the ‘movie’ mode on these digital cameras is more than adequate to shoot videos for YouTube and you will have to use 320×240 at 30 fps, anyway. Plus you will need to convert them to one of the above formats.
I would recommend a high speed SD card such as Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III for best camera performance.

Handycams are good for shooting excellent quality video…but cannot take great quality photos.
Digital cameras are good for shooting excellent quality photos…and good to very good quality ‘video’.

P.S. The SD600 can handle a maximum of a 2GB card, which will allow for 2x 1GB length videos.

I was looking to get a new camcorder and saw this one: Canon Vixia HFS 100 because I heard from reviews it’s an excellent camcorder and can also take 8 megapixel stills. But I’m wondering if I’ll even use it that much.

Also, it’s $900. All together I have about $1250. Do you think I should get this camcorder or am I wasting my money?

before jumping on the HD bandwagon i have to ask, do you have an HD display (HDTV) that you can enjoy your hobby productions in full resolution. HD really really really needs a big screen display to show off its potential, a computer monitor does not do it. having been in the business of both selling HD displays and a television producer, i recommend no less that 39 inch (1 m) size. the second thing to consider is there is no adequate method for archiving HD video that you shoot except for blu-ray. so you need to factor these two items, display and blu-ray burner into the cost analysis. you won’t be getting much of a still camera, the Vixia would be about the equivalent of a $150 Olympus Stylus, if that.
