Canon HV20 vs Canon XHA1 high def camcorder showdown
Filed under: canon camcorders

We shoot the same tape at the same place and time of day with a 4 grand XH A1 Canon and an $650 HV20 Canon. And the results will surprise you. Bob Nagy shoots with the XH A1 and Paul Terry Walhus shoots with the HV20 in this poolside video.

    No, I am a …
No, I am a broadcast engineer. I know exactly how these cameras work. There is NO setting on the XH-A1 that can duplicate the quality of the HV-20/30 video. It is just a newer technology. Want to really make the XH-A1 look like horse caca? Compare it to a $800 HFs-100. Want to make the XH-A1 look like a point-n-shoot? Compare it to the Canon T2i (Rebel 550) for $800. Even if you use a plastic 50mm 1.8 canon lens. Technology moves on! Yea!

    if you havnt found …
if you havnt found a good setting for ur xha1sofar pm me, i send u my presets…. default presets on the xha1 suck, true, but if you cant produce better images with the xha1 than with the hv20 u might wanna re-think your career choice. setting things to auto and go for “point & shoot” wont give you professional output, not with the hv20 nore the xha1

    I have both cameras …
I have both cameras..well the HV30 and the XH A1.. the HV30 is in a class by itself…a sucky class! To compare, or as one person wrote here and say the HV20 is better camera..PLEASE!! The sucky, pissy little lens on the HV30 (20) and now HV40 are pathetic. Yes good camcorder for the simple point and shoot or for my 6 year old son, BUT THE XH A1 kicks butt in all the HV20,30 & 40′s features..plain and simple, kind ofdumb to compare the, they are totally different. Sorry, but true..

I own and use both …
I own and use both of these cameras, and they are both exceptional. However, they are totally different technologies, they are NOT brothers. If you just want to point and shoot, the HV20 is fine, for control of all settings and professional results, the XH-A1 is the way to go. It is, after all, a “professional” camera as compared to a “consumer” camera (HV20). Also, “one chip vs three chips” is also not a true comparison, one uses CCD technology, and the other CMOS.

    Well, after 6 …
Well, after 6 months with the Xh-A1, I can tell you that there is NO combination of settings which will allow it to match the quality of the HV20 video.
Sure, it has lots of connectors…but if you A/B compare the video between the two, you will say hands down that the HV20′s video is superior. I only keep my Xh-A1 because people expect to see a big camera when they hire you.

The lens is also a …
The lens is also a significant factor, if you compare the focal systems the lens in the XH-A1 is superior, not to mention the 20X zoom. We can’t forgot that there are also two channels of XLR audio, a BNC jack and the signal processing with settings such as NR1 and NR2 make the camera substantially more capable than the HV20.

    The HV20 looks …
The HV20 looks amazingly good…it only falls apart in low light..very low light. The XH-A1 allows you so customize 28 settings so you could easily duplicate the look of the HV20. That said, the HV20 is a KILLER value. The tape transport in both cameras is identical. Too bad the 20 is off the market.
