Canon A1 Hi8 camcorder review & footage

I have two versions of this camcorder. This one the Mk1 and also the Mk2 which came out a little later.

They did suffer with capacitor problems due to little use and stored for years.

    I used an old Panasonic full size VHS to film this. It is a bit grainy due to low light.

    @DrCassette No, I …
    @DrCassette No, I bought it working about a year ago, one of the few working A1′s around. If they have had regular use then the caps don’t leak.

    Yes I did crop the image to 16:9/HD as I now like to upload all vids to YT to the highest quality. The macro is manual when you move the zoom handle like on most older cameras.

    Keep a look out on ebay as I’ve seen some working ones going fairly cheap. Thanks :)

    @watchitnz Yes it is surprisingly good for a 1 chip, but I believe the pixels are pretty good and large.

    Did you replaced …
    Did you replaced all those bad capacitors in this camera? Does it have a wide screen mode or did you use sofware for making this a widescreen video?
    How does the macro work? Does it have that thing on the zoom lever wich you pull or push to get into the macro mode or does it work automatically like on modern camcorders?
    One of the Sony Handycams I had used a mechanism like this. But that mechanism was crap, it always got stuck when loading or unloading a tape.
    Very nice camcorder!
