Which is better for a camcorder: Canon or Sony??

I plan on buying dvd camcorders but unfortunately, I don’t know which one is better, Canon DC230 or Sony DCR-DVD908. The factors I consider are:
- long battery life
- long life / not easily broken
- other better specs.

HELP! I need it ASAP. thanks!

If you plan on doing any editing, you do not want a DVD based camcorder. Either hard drive based (OK video quality) or miniDV tape based (best video quality) is better suited.

NO consumer grade camcorder comes with a good battery in the box – you will need to get an extra, optional, high-capacity rechargeable battery.

Any piece of electronic equipment – especially one with moving parts – can be broken. If you need "rugged", there is no consumer camcorder that will meet that requirement.

Does anyone here have a Canon ZR900, ZR930 or ZR950? Have you had problems with it and your PC?

I’m looking to buy a mini-DV camcorder…preferably Canon. These models are in my price range (of course, the cheaper the better) but I’ve read some reviews saying that they don’t work well with Windows…the editing software I use is Pinnacle Studio 8 by the way…on a Windows XP…have you all had any problems with these cameras, or any suggestions for other cameras?

As miniDV tape camcorders, they transfer video using the camcorder’s DV port (not USB) connected to the computer’s Firewire400 port (not USB) using a firewire cable. Firewire, i.Link, and IEEE1394a are all the same thing.

Mostly, the folks who have trouble transferring are trying to use USB because that is the cable that came in the box. USB is for video streaming and transferring stills off a memory card. Firewire cables are cheap. Firewire ports can be cheap if your computer has an available PCI slot (desktop) or PCMCIA slot (laptop. If you need to get an Express card for Firewire, they can get a bit expensive.

Of the three camcorders you list, I like the ZR900 and 930. They have a mic-in jack to connect an external mic (though they do not have manual audio control).

Are all Canon Vixia HD camcorders compatible with Vista? ?

I checked the Best Buy website for the Vixia HF10 and the HF11. When compared against each other the sheet says neither are compatible with Vista. However, I was told at Best Buy in person that they both will work with XP and if something is compatible with Windows XP that it is also compatible with Vista. I want to be SURE before I buy with the 15% restocking fee they have. Anyone know?

Tiddvision is correct.

The bigger issue is that the Vixia HF10 and HF11 save high definition video to AVCHD format video. Microsoft MovieMaker cannot deal with AVCHD format (MTS/MT2S) video files.

Current versions of Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere can. Then, your task is to be sure these can run under Vista or XP. Just because something will run under XP DOES NOT mean it will run under Vista.

If the Best Buy person says it will work and it does not, then they should not be charging you a re-stocking fee. If the box says it will not work and the BestBuy person says it will, write a note on a piece of paper and make the Best Buy person sign it – with something like "This _____________ camcorder (include manufacuter and model number) will work using ____________ operating system. If it does not, purchaser can return the unit and will not be charged a restocking fee."
